Kaya

Kaya is everything you could want in a dog…in a tidy compact package.  Manners, smarts, on/off switch, eager to please and never-ending drive.  She is just under 16” tall, but she has the speed and athleticism to race with the big dogs!

Kaya is a flyball phenom, her fastest time is 3.8 and she’s raced her entire career as the height dog for D.E.O. Speedwaggin’s Division I team.  She is one of the top dogs in the history of Flyball racing, with over 100,000 NAFA points.

Agility is another of Kaya’s specialties, she was a Steeplechase Finalist at the Cynosports Agility World Championships when she was just 2 years old.  That same year she placed 5th at the Western Regional Championships of the Agility Association of Canada. She is a rocket in NADAC Agility, and has recently started competing in AKC Agility since they now allow mixed breeds to compete.

She is a fabulous performing dog, Kaya has been in the Superdogs shows in Canada and the U.S., in CoolDog Productions shows in Texas and Colorado, and she was the “stunt double” in K9s in Flight’s summer production at Denver’s premier theme park.  Her role was to act as the “puppy” who was not old enough to be part of the show yet…behind the host’s back she would secretly perform the weaves, do frisbee tricks and even high-jump over 48” by vaulting off another dog’s back…all to the pure delight of the crowd.

After every performance, Kaya’s favorite part is when she gets to share her tennis balls or frisbees with the kids in the crowds.  It must be music to her ears when the kids are all shouting “Kaya!” “Bring it to me, I want a turn!” “Kaya come here!” “I didn’t get to throw it yet!” as they all throw the ball or frisbee for her endless times.  She NEVER tires of kids throwing toys for her to fetch.

Kaya still looks like a puppy, she has big cute ears that cause some people to ask if she is part Beagle.  She is a rescued dog, and although her sire is unknown, her athletic abilities will convince anyone that he had to be a Border Collie!

In Nebraska, a woman with a rescued Rat Terrier had an unintentional litter, the sire was suspected to be the neighbor’s Border Collie.  All of the puppies found homes except the last two, who were turned into the Rat Terrier Rescue in Nebraska.  A friend of mine found the puppies listed on Petfinder.com, and I went to Nebraska to help her pick which one of the two puppies she would take.  Jessica picked out Talon, who is now the Denver Speed Demon’s Division I team height dog.  And of course the last puppy was way too cute to just leave there at the rescue…I had to take her home!  Best spontaneous decision I have ever made.

Every night Kaya sits by my bed while I get settled in, politely waiting for me to lift up the blankets and invite her onto the bed so she can snuggle right next to me.  Kaya is the definition of man’s best friend!
